A blown or flat tire on a tractor-trailer is not something to keep driving on. A flat inside dual overheats and can take the good tire next to it, and a steer tire failure is a real safety emergency. A tire that failed from low pressure or a dragging brake is a symptom. Let the mechanic look at the wheel end so the new tire doesn’t fail the same way.
Repair it where it sits, or tow it?
Tire failures are one of the clearest “fix it where it sits” calls. A tow rarely makes sense unless the blowout damaged the hub, bearings, or brakes, or the truck stopped somewhere it isn’t safe to work. If flying tread tore up air lines or wiring, those repairs can usually happen on the same visit.
Don’t limp a loaded trailer on a flat for miles to reach the next exit. A shredding inside dual can start a fire, ruin the wheel, and destroy the tire beside it. Get out of the travel lane as safely as you can and call.

Can you change a steer tire on the interstate shoulder?
Yes, when the truck is out of the travel lane and there’s room to work safely. On a narrow shoulder or in a work zone the truck may need to move first, or an officer may need to manage traffic.
Do you carry tires on the service truck?
It depends on size. Give dispatch the exact size from the sidewall and the position so the right tire can be sourced before the mechanic heads out.
Can a flat trailer tire be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A puncture in the tread area can often be properly repaired. Sidewall or shoulder damage, run-flat damage, and large cuts mean replacement.
Can I drive on a flat inside dual to the next exit?
Not for any real distance. The good tire ends up carrying the whole load, overheats, and can fail too. A shredding tire can also damage air lines, wiring, and fenders, or start a fire.
Why do tires fail on the grades around East Tennessee?
Long climbs and descents build heat in tires and brakes, and a dragging brake or low pressure makes it worse. Check pressures cold before a run over the plateau or through the mountains. Our mountain grades and winter guide covers more.
Will you check the wheel after a blowout?
The mechanic should look at the wheel, studs, lug nuts, and nearby air lines and wiring. A blowout can hide damage that causes a second failure later.
