Why Oak Ridge keeps trucks busy

Oak Ridge was built during World War II as the “Secret City,” and today it’s home to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Y-12 National Security Complex, and a big cluster of contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers. The former K-25 site on the west end has been redeveloped as the Heritage Center industrial park, and other business parks line the roads into town. Add ongoing construction and cleanup work, and there’s a steady flow of flatbeds, dump trucks, box trucks, and tractor-trailers.

We work on those trucks at contractor yards, business parks, and job sites — and on the highways in and out of town.

Getting in and out of Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge isn’t on an interstate, so every truck uses one of a few state routes:

  • SR 62 (Oak Ridge Highway) east through Solway and Karns toward Knoxville.
  • Pellissippi Parkway (SR 162), which starts at SR 62 near Solway and runs south to I-40/I-75 at Exit 376.
  • SR 95 south toward I-40 at Exit 364 and Lenoir City.
  • SR 58 southwest past the Heritage Center to I-40 near Kingston.

These are divided highways with some long, rolling stretches along the Clinch River and Melton Hill Lake. If you break down, give dispatch the road, direction, and the nearest cross street or landmark.

Secure sites and access

Some Oak Ridge facilities are secure federal sites with their own access rules. If a truck breaks down inside a controlled area, follow the site’s procedures. We can work outside the gate, in staging or parking areas, and at contractor yards where a service truck is allowed. Tell dispatch exactly where the truck is and who the site contact is.
