Maryville and Alcoa sit about 15 miles south of downtown Knoxville on Alcoa Highway, next to McGhee Tyson Airport and the end of I-140. Simplified map — not for navigation.

Blount County’s working side

Maryville is the Blount County seat, and Alcoa sits right next to it, closer to the river. Together they’re home to McGhee Tyson Airport, the 134th Air Refueling Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard, the long-running aluminum works that gave Alcoa its name, and major manufacturers and employers including Denso and Clayton. That adds up to a steady stream of freight: inbound parts, outbound product, air cargo, and construction hauling for a county that keeps growing.

Two main roads bring most of those trucks in. Alcoa Highway (US-129) runs straight from I-40 in Knoxville, and Pellissippi Parkway (I-140) comes across the river from West Knoxville to meet it near the airport.

Alcoa Highway and the construction zone

Alcoa Highway has been under a long, multi-phase rebuild to turn it into a full controlled-access freeway, with some phases expected to run to around 2030. Work zones mean narrow lanes, shifting ramps, and short shoulders — not a great place to break down. If the truck can still move, get off at the next interchange or into a business lot before stopping. If it can’t, get as far right as you can, flashers on, and call.

Heading toward the mountains

South and east of Maryville, the roads climb into the foothills. US-321 heads toward Townsend and the Smokies, and US-129 winds south toward Deals Gap. The Deals Gap stretch — the “Tail of the Dragon” — is closed to vehicles over 30 feet long, so tractor-trailers shouldn’t try it. Box trucks and work trucks that do run these roads lean hard on their brakes and cooling systems, and a breakdown out there can put you a long way from anything.

Maryville & Alcoa mobile truck repair: questions

Do you cover all of Blount County?

We cover Maryville, Alcoa, and the surrounding area, and farther out toward Townsend, Friendsville, and Louisville when a truck needs us. Call with the location and dispatch will tell you straight.

Can you work near McGhee Tyson Airport?

We work at businesses, yards, and lots around the airport. Access to secured airport or military areas depends on that facility’s rules, so tell dispatch exactly where the truck is.

Can trucks take US-129 to Deals Gap?

Not tractor-trailers. The Deals Gap stretch of US-129 is restricted for vehicles over 30 feet long because of its tight curves.

Is Alcoa Highway still under construction?

Parts of it have been under a multi-year widening project. Expect work zones and changing ramps, and pick a safe place to stop if the truck is acting up.
