A truck-heavy interstate
Interstate 81 begins at I-40 Exit 421 in Jefferson County, near Dandridge, and runs northeast through the Great Valley past Morristown, Bulls Gap, and Greeneville toward Bristol and Virginia. It’s one of the most important truck routes in the eastern U.S., linking the South with Pennsylvania, New York, and New England, and trucks make up a large share of its traffic.
In our area, I-81 runs through rolling farmland and past the Morristown industrial parks. Most of the road is four lanes, so a breakdown here means passing trucks close by.

Where trucks break down on I-81
- The I-40 split. Merging traffic at Exit 421, and trucks that just came off a long run on I-40.
- White Pine (Exit 4). The Pilot here is the first truck stop northbound, where drivers pull in to deal with a problem.
- Morristown (Exits 8 and 12). Plant traffic entering and leaving the interstate.
- Open stretches north of Morristown. Blowouts, overheating in summer, and warning lights at speed.
Heading north toward Greeneville, I-81 adds a truck climbing lane on one grade near Jearoldstown — a reminder that the Great Valley isn’t flat. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge on the long pulls.
