Trucks run on far more electricity than they used to.

Engine and emissions controls, ABS, telematics, sleeper accessories, inverters, and LED lighting all depend on healthy batteries, a strong alternator, and clean connections. One corroded ground or chafed harness can cause problems that look like something else entirely.

East Tennessee winters are rough on truck wiring. TDOT treats roads with salt brine ahead of snow and ice, and that spray gets into seven-way plugs, light sockets, and ground connections, then keeps corroding long after the storm. Cold mornings expose weak batteries, and trucks that hook and drop all day wear out pigtails and plugs. We bring the meters and tools to find the actual fault.

Repair it where it sits, or tow it?

Nearly every electrical problem short of a fire or major harness damage can be diagnosed and fixed on site. Starters, alternators, batteries, cables, lights, and trailer cords are routine mobile work.

If you smell burning plastic or see smoke from wiring, shut the engine off, turn off the battery disconnect if the truck has one, and move away. That’s a fire risk, not something to drive on.

Electrical & Charging Repair: common questions

How do I tell if it’s the battery or the starter?

If the dash lights dim hard or the engine cranks slowly, suspect batteries or cables. A single click with good battery voltage points toward the starter or its circuit. Testing confirms it.

Why do my batteries keep dying?

Common causes are an alternator that isn’t fully charging, a parasitic draw from an accessory or short, aging batteries, or corroded connections. A charging test and draw test find the cause.

Can you fix trailer lights that only work sometimes?

Yes. Intermittent trailer lights almost always come down to corrosion or a loose connection in the seven-way plug, pigtail, nose box, harness, or a ground — road brine makes it worse.

Do you replace alternators roadside?

Yes, on most trucks. Give dispatch the engine make and model so the right alternator can be sourced.

Can a light out get me put out of service?

It can, depending on which lamp and the time of day. Lighting is one of the most common inspection violations. See our DOT out-of-service guide.

Can bad wiring cause engine or emissions codes?

Yes. Chafed harnesses and corroded connectors cause many sensor faults, so checking wiring is part of diagnosing any code.
